Creating A Stucco Ceiling

Creating A Stucco Ceiling poses some challenges than creating a stucco wall.

Because of its orientation, creating a stucco ceiling might be more challenging than creating a stucco wall. For this procedure, it is advisable to use stucco in spray form to create the same effects as traditional stucco methods.

Materials

  • Medium stucco spray mixture (amount will vary depending on ceiling size)
  • 5 gallon pail
  • Paddle
  • Electric drill
  • Plastic covering
  • Tape
  • Spray gun and compressor or spray gun kit.
  • Rubber gloves
  • Breathing mask

Procedure

  1. If possible, remove all furniture from the room. Otherwise, cover these and the floor with secure plastic. Cover the walls too, and tape the covering tightly along the edge where the ceiling and the wall converge (Dual sided tape is ideal). Cover all fixtures like switches or lights with masking tape.
  2. For health precautions, wear gloves and a mask. Prepare the spray mixture: fill the five-gallon pail halfway with water, then pour the mixture slowly into it, while stirring with a paddle. Mix it with a half-inch drill. The resulting mixture should be of medium consistency: if too light it will drip from the ceiling; but if too heavy it will clog the sprayer.
  3. Prepare the gun and the compressor and load the stucco mixture. Test the spray by applying a blast on a corner of the ceiling, to make certain that the gun functions and that the consistency of the mixture is ideal.
  4. Start painting the surface. Spray across the ceiling in a straight, horizontal pattern, working back and forth as each end of the surface is covered.
  5. As the stucco ceiling is being applied, periodically check the surface for errors or missed spots. Repair these immediately.
  6. Let the stucco dry for up to 8 hours or overnight. Clean the surface once it is completely dry, and uncover the rest of the room.
  7. Although creating a ceiling using stucco may be a bit challenging, you'll find that the end product is well worth the effort. These types of ceilings can bring a lot of style to your room.
